At first, she recalls
the
courtship. This was when the control
began. Later, she hopes he will change as he has promised.
He is liar. She becomes confused and is in pain. Eventually, he will own her just as he has wanted to do. She begins to think he is right. She begins to think she is to be blamed for the beatings. She begins to believe him when he says no one else would love her. She thinks every husband beats his wife. She is both hopeless and helpless. She thinks of suicide and homicide. No woman has to be beat up to be a
wife. Not all husbands beat
their wives and that is the truth of it. It amazes me how many
women suffer at the hands of their loved ones. As a college
professor I have had to deal with controlling men in classrooms where
they wanted to control a girlfriend. I have had female students
thank me for making a boy move to the other side of the room. It
seems the girls do not know how to GET OUT of a relationship that was
started as an exploration but ended in an abusive situation.
Don't stay. Get help. At Texas A&M University - Kingsville
we have a Police Department, an office of Student Affairs, faculty,
department chairs, deans, provosts and a President---all of these
individuals, and as a group the entire staff and academic affairs
mixture--stand ready to help you avoid an abusive relationship or work
your way out of an abusive relationship.
