Cycle of Violence

You can begin understanding the Cycle of Violence by starting at any section and working around in a clockwise procedure.

The most important thing to remember is this:
       The cycle will be completed.
The cycle can be broken at only one segment.
Only the victim can elect to break the cycle.
The perpetrator will always promise to break the cycle.
       The perpetrator lies.
       The perpetrator lies.
       The perpetrator lies.
       The perpetrator lies.
None of us can avoid the stress of everyday life.

For the batterer, the tensions lead to abusive behavior.
Some violent episodes last a few moments, a few minutes, or a few hours, or even a few days.

Stress Period:  Things that cause stress are:
Economics:  the money is not there to do what he wants.
Alcohol & drugs:  although often the wife beater is an "ideal church person."   A Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, a Pastor, a member in good standing.
A Role Change:  at home or work, he must cope with new expectations from someone.
Change in Family Structure: child grow up.
Sexual Dysfunction:  High Blood Pressure Medicine
Medical Problems:  age and mental self-destruction.

Violent Episode:  It will occur no matter what he promises.

Crisis State:  This is the BEST opportunity for victims to break the cycle.
Victim Forgives:  the batterer relies upon this trait.
Abuses Remorse:  he says he is sorry, again, and again.

Honeymoon:  the batterer cycles through the Kindness Technique for controlling the victim.
Flowers are sent.  She thinks he will really change now.
He must have this phase of the cycle or his control dies.

Calmness:  a time when things seem to be real.
He goes to work and returns to evening meals.
She reassesses, ponders her plight, thinks her prayers are answered.

Stress Period:  something, anything, sets him off again!
